Plaza Showroom is too pretty to sit in the dark. A beauty of a production is being staged there at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, “Bolero — The Show.” This is a Latin-Caribbean-inspired dance revue that hopes to catch on a couple of times a month.
Similar to the merengue, this is a step-by-step process. If the show spins numbers at the box office, it will return.
“Bolero” is billed as a storytelling production, infusing live music and dance (which is also live). The costumes are a colorful splash of bling and feathers.
Venezuelan singer-songwriter Adan Alejandro and Colombian dance great Jenny Bolivar co-produce. Mexican artist Enrique Lugo is director-choreographer.
You might recall Lugo as the choreographer for the Charo show that was being developed for Notoriety Live, which never made it out of the blocks. The Latin-dance vet worked on the late, and great, “Fashionistas” in the late 2000s at Krave/Harmon Theater on the Strip.
From Lugo, “My goal was to explore Latin American rhythm and transform them into a powerful, storytelling experience.”
Dancer-choreographer-aerialist Patricia Bouchebel, a member of “Baz” at Palazzo, “Tournament of Kings” at Excalibur, Lost Spirits Distillery at Area15 and “Cherry Boom Boom” at the Tropicana, among other Vegas productions, is among the cast.
Further out, the Plaza Showroom is working on one-offs over the next few months. Vegas stage vet Tom Stevens has “The Tony Bennett Experience” on Aug. 8. Stevens and his backing jazz band are celebrating Bennett’s 100th birthday, which is Aug. 3.
On Aug. 22-23 it’s “Magic Men of Australia,” a country that seems teeming — teeming, I tell you! — with buffed male dancers. This is an adult review, yes, not a mentalism-hypnosis show. Research accordingly.
Cool Hang Alert
Tony Felicetta has done it all. Stand-up comedy. A recurring gig as DJ Tone Def. Portraying Ringo Starr in Beatles tributes. At 8 p.m. today at The Composers Room at Historic Commercial Center, he summons Dean Martin for “Dino After Dark.” This is Felicetta taking on classics from such legends as Martin, Sinatra and Bobby Darin. He’s also putting the swing on AC/DC, Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne and Radiohead. T.F. is a fun hang. Ask him to show his heirloom ruby ring. There’s a story there. Go to thecomposersroom.com for intel.
