In the June 14 Maine Sunday Telegram, Keith Vallencourt asked a plaintive question (“As Trump continues to trample on morality, where is the church?”). It’s a question asked from his portion of the church, the self-styled evangelical community.
Me? I see the church everywhere, protesting the corruption and greed of Trump and his cohorts; on the streets warning immigrants about the presence of vicious ICE agents; advocating anti-racism in the face of increased bigotry sanctioned by the Supreme Court; working to provide sustenance to those penalized for not being able get jobs or support; on marches demonstrating for LGBTQ rights; in climate activism, seeking to provide hope and health for billions, rather than spending billions of dollars on vanity projects in space; in coalition with other faith communities working for justice, compassion and peace.
The church is everywhere, providing hope and possibilities for all people, regardless of nationality, race or creed. Are we doing enough? Obviously not, but that is no excuse to stop trying.
