The law firm representing the family of the Colombian man who was shot and killed by a federal agent in Biddeford last month is asking anyone who lives near the scene of the killing to share video they might have.
Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, 25, was killed near the intersection of Pool and Hill streets by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent identified as David Brouillette by one of his ex-wives. Guerrero’s death sparked protests and calls for a transparent investigation of the shooting.
In a request for information from the public, which was shared by Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain on social media Wednesday, Gideon Asen LLC said it is seeking photos, videos and information in the area of the incident between 6:45-7:45 a.m. on July 13.
“If your recording does not capture the incident itself, it may still help by showing vehicles, pedestrians, or activity before or afterward,” the law firm, which has offices in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, said in its request.
ICE has said it “was conducting targeted surveillance on the last known address of an illegal alien with a final order of removal.” When the driver attempted to flee, according to the agency, a federal officer discharged his weapon. The Department of Homeland Security has admitted that Guerrero wasn’t the intended target of the enforcement action.
The federal agents on the scene weren’t equipped with functioning body cameras and so far no video from surveillance cameras in the area captures the shooting and the actions that led to it.
The law firm’s callout also includes a written statement from Karolina Alvarez, Guerrero’s wife.
“Nothing can change what happened to my beloved Johan Sebastián, but my daughter and I continue searching for a better understanding of what really happened that morning,” Alvarez said. “If you know anything (or) have any information that may help, I ask you to please share it with us. Any detail could help bring clarity to that morning.
“We wish to offer our heartfelt thanks for your compassion and your support during this incredibly difficult time,” Alvarez said.
LaFountain’s post urged residents to share the request with their neighbors, “especially those who live in the Pool Street and Hill Street area or regularly commute through the neighborhood during the morning.”
“For those who have asked how they can support the family’s search for answers, this is one meaningful way to help,” the mayor said.
