Two highly lauded restaurants — The Rusty Spoon and Elize — have occupied the very prominent space at 55 W. Church St. downtown over the last 15 years. But that sun-bathed dining room has sat vacant for six years ever since the latter shuttered in the summer of 2020, a result of the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

Now comes word that Tamara Heritage, a sister restaurant to Tamara Modern Indian Cuisine on Visitors Circle and Tamara Lake Mary (a restaurant I reviewed favorably earlier this year, faux flora and neon lighting notwithstanding) is poised to move into the high-profile space before the end of the year.

Owners Mandy and Gagan Singh say Tamara Heritage will be a completely new concept, and differ from their other two restaurants by offering a “highly sophisticated” culinary affair.

“We are elevating the complete experience, from the ambience and service to the cuisine itself,” Gagan says, adding that Tamara Heritage will aim for a “Michelin-star caliber standard featuring curated tasting and set menus.”

Not since the days of American Gymkhana have we really seen an Indian restaurant push the envelope and offer restaurant-goers novel and innovative Indian dishes so I, for one, really look forward to seeing what Tamara Heritage has to offer.

Singh says they’re working hard to renovate the space with the aim to have Tamara Heritage open before the end of the year.
