The Honolulu Board of Water Supply is again urging Oahu residents to limit their water consumption to essential needs only due to widespread power outages in the metro areas and on the North Shore.
Earlier this morning, Hawaiian Electric Co. reported over 250,900 customers remained without power on Oahu, Hawaii island and Maui.
Power outages can affect water service across the island by hindering the board’s ability to pump water from wells and other sources. Generators have been deployed across Oahu to prevent water outages as much as possible, according to a BWS statement.
“If water cannot be pumped to a reservoir tank, the water remaining in the tank will be all that is available until electrical power is restored or made available through other means,” according to a BWS statement. “Water conservation is needed during significant storm events and electrical outages until storm warnings have officially been canceled, electrical power is restored and water levels in reservoir tanks have return to normal.”
