Flood advisory issued for Oahu due to ‘excessive rainfall’

A flood advisory has been issued for Oahu due to “excessive rainfall,” effective until 5 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service is warning of flooding caused by excessive rainfall, particularly over Central Oahu, with minor flooding on roads, in poor drainage areas, and low-lying streams.

At 1:53 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over Central Oahu, with minor flooding ongoing or expected to begin shortly, the advisory said. Rain was falling at a rate of up to an inch per hour.

The advisory area included Honolulu, Waipio, Kunia, Wheeler Field, Mililani, Waikele, Schofield Barracks, Waipahu, Wahiawa, Pearl City, Makakilo and Kapolei.

“Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding,” the advisory warned.

A flood watch, meanwhile, remains in effect for Hawaii island as Tropical Storm Moke heads toward the state, threatening up to 15 inches of rain on grounds still saturated from Hurricane Lala. The forecast for Moke has it passing south of the state, but still bringing heavy rain to the Big Island this weekend and lesser amounts to the other islands early next week.
