I couldn’t help myself and had to respond to Mr. James McGrath’s (of Miami Lakes, Fla.) letter of Sunday, Aug. 9 (“Maine aspirations canceled due to politics”).
First of all, I would like to thank him for his kind comments about Maine. I personally fell in love with Maine in the 1980s and really never left (full disclosure, some “snowbirding” has taken place). Maine is one of the most spectacular places I have ever lived. And, as a “military brat,” there were plenty.
I am sorry Mr. McGrath has had a “change of heart” because of Sen. Susan Collins’ voting record — many of us are not happy about her voting record and more — but I had to chuckle at his response that he prefers to stay in Florida, where “politicians say exactly what they will do.”
All I had to do was Google some of the lead politicians in Florida (and one in Maine) with one question: “Do they have a criminal record and/or a nefarious background?” The result? DeSantis, Donalds, Rubio, Gaetz, Scott, Moms of Liberty and (Jay) Collins. I encourage him, or anyone else for that matter, to give it a try; then, we can talk.
