If we had a President Romney, Susan Collins would likely be coasting to another term in the Senate as a moderate Republican. Sadly, she is a stalwart of the party that current Maine gubernatorial candidate Rick Bennett says he can no longer recognize.
Unlike the very conservative Republican Liz Cheney, she has chosen to stay in Trump’s good graces and has given us Brett Kavanaugh, Pete Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Howard Lutnick — just to name a few of the very flawed individuals she has voted to confirm. No doubt that if her vote were required to confirm the new attorney general, Todd Blanche, she would have been a solid “Yes.”
The Republican leaders always let her vote “the right way” when they don’t need her vote. The game is now up for Collins, who is the only one of the Maine delegation to take money from the fossil fuel industry.
Instead, we have a candidate in Troy Jackson who will represent the interests of working Mainers and oppose Donald Trump’s corruption.
