I wanted to thank the Portland Press Herald for its June 25 article “Windjammers want more Mainers to take schooner staycations.” Without it, I might not have been inspired to take a cruise across Penobscot Bay on the schooner Grace Bailey, and what a phenomenal journey I would have missed!
What an amazing privilege to see the lighthouses and cliffs from the ship’s perspective, to meet the lovely people of Frenchboro and Stonington, to swim and sail in Hell’s Half Acre, eat lobster on the shell beach of Pell Island, accompany the guillemots, porpoises and storm petrels down the Eggemoggin Reach and watch skilled sailors ply sail and rope to tack into the teeth of wind and tide.
I really do hope more Mainers are motivated to take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience our maritime heritage and our beautiful islands and coastlines.
