A 3-year-old was seriously injured when a family member ran them over with a vehicle at a Lagrange residence on Wednesday, officials say.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that its deputies were responding to the incident just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, but were advised that the child was already being taken to a hospital by family members.
A fire investigator with the Office of State Fire Marshal “intercepted the car and placed the child and a parent in his cruiser,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office coordinated the staging of ambulances at multiple locations in the area. The fire investigator linked up with an Orono Fire Department ambulance, the sheriff’s office said, and the 3-year-old was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious injuries.
No further details on the incident were provided by the sheriff’s office on Wednesday.
The sheriff’s office encourages parents to remind their children “that it is not safe to be playing behind vehicles in driveways or to run behind vehicles that are in motion,” and said all drivers should take extra care on the roads with students set to return to school.
