Greg Castoras rushed for four touchdowns and three 2-point conversion, and Marshwood’s offense was in midseason form Thursday night as the Hawks opened their football season with a 50-27 victory at Sanford.
Both teams scored three touchdowns in a wild first quarter that ended with Marshwood ahead 22-21. Castoras kicked things off with an 89-yard run after the teams exchanged early turnovers.
Sanford then grabbed a 7-6 lead when Adam Cote Jr. found Tyson Kimball wide open behind Marshwood’s defense for a 68-yard touchdown. Castoras answered with a 2-yard TD run, but Cote went deep again, connecting with Michael Kiley for a 58-yard score.
After Ryder Webber’s 8-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter put Marshwood ahead 22-14, Kiley broke free for a 74-yard scoring run on the final play of the quarter.
A 1-yard plunge by Castoras was the only TD in the second quarter. Logan Sevigny’s 5-yard run in the third quarter cut Marshwood’s lead to 28-27, but Sanford missed the extra point.
Marshwood quarterback Michael Sbrizza made it 34-27 with a 5-yard run, and the Hawks tacked on two more TDs in the fourth quarter — a 2-yard run by Noah Goodwin and a 43-yard run by Castoras.
BIDDEFORD 28, BRUNSWICK 6: Estevao Lembissa scored three touchdowns, including an 81-yard screen pass, as the Tigers opened their season with a win against the Dragons in Biddeford.
Lembissa gave Biddeford a 6-0 lead when he reached the end zone on a 5-yard run late in the first quarter.
Tigers quarterback Ernie Dorr connected with Lembissa for a 38-yard touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter. Stanley Richerson extended the lead in the third quarter with a 29-yard run, and Lembissa got his third TD on the final play of the third when he took a screen pass from Dorr and raced the length of the field.
Brunswick avoided a shutout when quarterback Jacob Austin scored on a 3-yard keeper with less than three minutes remaining.

MT. ARARAT 8, HAMPDEN ACADEMY/MT. VIEW 0: Cali LeClair scored three goals to lead the Eagles past the Mustangs in a season opener in Topsham.
Avery Elliott, Maddie Graf, Emma Graffam, Leah Lafrance and Maddie Kenney also scored.
MT. BLUE 5, BRUNSWICK 1: Freshman Ella Trask scored twice to propel the Cougars to a season-opening win over the Dragons in Farmington.
Tabby Heseltine and Kilee Merrill each contributed a goal and an assist to Mt. Blue’s victory, and Reese Nye also scored. Goalie Gwen Lesperance made eight saves.
Sophomore Grace Roak scored Brunswick’s goal off an assist from freshman Nia Saucier. Isabel Troche had four saves.
SACOPEE VALLEY 6, TRAIP ACADEMY 0: Avery Lajoie and Alexis Muccio each scored twice to lead the Hawks to a season-opening win over the Rangers in Hiram.
Cassady Madgey and Ari Poree also scored, and Ariana Gray had two assists.

KENNEBUNK 3, PORTLAND 2: Sawyer Pow broke tie with about eight minutes remaining, lifting the Rams over the Bulldogs in Portland.
Kennebunk’s Chris Thompson and Portland’s Marcelo Malonda both scored twice, once in each half.
Kennebunk keeper Griffin Whitney stopped five shots, as did Mateo Pulaski for Portland.
MORSE 2, BELFAST 0: Milton Paulo scored in the first half and Eli Sommers added to the lead in the second as the Shipbuilders beat the Lions in a season opener in Bath.
