Here are 10 shows to be excited about this autumn. (Note: Premiere dates are subject to change.)
Youth
Dating is hard — even more so for a 50-year-old divorcée who’s also dealing with her ailing parents and a son heading off to college. The rom-com stars the always watchable Sharon Horgan (“Pulling,” “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”), who also created the series. Friday on HBO Max
Carrie
Ah, October. Home of sweet treats, silly tricks — and a reimagining of the horror novel that helped launch Stephen King’s career. The new series by Mike Flanagan (“The Haunting of Hill House”) focuses on the titular character (played by Summer H. Howell) as she contends with the death of her father, the hell that is high school and the emergence of telekinetic powers. Oct. 7 on Prime Video
Avatar: Seven Havens
This sequel to the critically acclaimed “Avatar: The Last Airbender” (the Nickelodeon version, not the awful Netflix live-action one) and “The Legend of Korra” follows a new Avatar — Pavi — who’s tasked with saving the Seven Havens, lest calamity falls upon the world. Oct. 9 on Paramount+
VisionQuest
“WandaVision,” Marvel’s first TV series after “Avengers: Endgame,” remains among its best, so the stakes are high for the spinoff “VisionQuest.” Paul Bettany returns as the android Vision, who’s in hiding after the events of “WandaVision,” contending with eternal questions of identity, belonging, family — and genocidal artificial intelligence. Oct. 14 on Disney+
Crystal Lake
Have you ever thought to yourself, “Why did Jason Voorhees turn out the way he did?” Well, this series is for you, then. “Crystal Lake” takes us back to the beginning, before the 1980 film that kicked off the Friday the 13th franchise, with Linda Cardellini starring as Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother. Oct. 15 on Peacock
Nocturne
In this crime drama, homicide detective Jonah (Liev Schreiber) and FBI agent Saga (Zazie Beetz) — Jonah’s surrogate daughter — are pitted against a cunning serial killer (Stephen Graham). The series is based on the Lars Kepler bestselling novels “Lazarus” and “The Sandman.” Oct. 30 on Apple TV
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Season 3
War — what is it good for? Apparently another season of this fantasy epic. Season 3 takes place five years after the events of Season 2, as the elves do everything in their power to stop Sauron (who’s working to create the One Ring) from conquering all of Middle-earth. Nov. 11 on Prime Video
Yellowjackets, Season 4
Across three seasons, “Yellowjackets” has told a bonkers story of survival, about the best and worst of humanity through a teenage group of plane crash survivors and their adult selves. Its dual-timeline narrative — one set in 1996, when the plane crashed; the other 25 years later — has worked hard at keeping its secrets. Here’s hoping the fourth and final season will finally answer our questions. Nov. 20 on Paramount+
Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Season 3
The previous two seasons of this adaptation of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” fantasy-adventure novel series have been supremely enjoyable adventures. I’m expecting Season 3, which adapts “The Titan’s Curse,” to be no different as Percy (Walker Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) continue to try to prevent the fall of Olympus. Nov. 20 on Disney+
Blade Runner 2099
This sequel to the “Blade Runner” and “Blade Runner 2049” films is based on Philip K. Dick’s sci-fi novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” Starring Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, “2099” drops viewers into a future in which Replicants rule and humans are second-class citizens.
