Bicyclist, 40, dies in collision on Sand Island Access Road

A bicyclist died this morning after being struck by a vehicle on Sand Island Access Road near the Keehi Marina Boat Harbor in Kalihi, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

The collision occurred at about 7:10 a.m., police said.

A 34-year-old man was driving eastbound on Sand Island Access Road with a 34-year-old male passenger when he struck an unidentified male bicyclist traveling in the same direction, according to police.

The bicyclist was ejected onto the roadway. After EMS was called at 7:12 a.m., the bicyclist, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.

The motorist and passenger were not injured.

At this time, speed, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision, police said.

The death is Oahu’s 31st traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 68 at the same time last year.

The investigation is ongoing.
