Downtown Salt Lake City traffic diverted after West Temple, 400 South crash kills 1

A motorcyclist was killed in a collision in a busy downtown Salt Lake City intersection Monday afternoon, police said.

The crash happened at about 2:15 p.m. at the intersection of 400 South and West Temple, near the federal courthouse, according to a Salt Lake City police spokesperson.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. Police did not immediately identify the person killed.

Two people in the vehicle that collided with the motorcyclist were taken to a hospital with survivable injuries, the spokesperson said.

A third car was also struck as a result of the collision, police said. No one in that car was injured.

Debris could be seen across the major intersection about two hours after the crash.

As afternoon commuters worked to leave downtown, drivers were diverted away from the intersection. On nearby streets, cars lined up by the dozens, seeking a detour.

Police reopened the intersection just after 6 p.m.

This is the second fatal crash involving a motorcyclist in Salt Lake County in the last three days. On Saturday afternoon, a motorcyclist was killed in a wreck involving two other vehicles on Interstate 15 in Draper, FOX13 reported.
