Happy birthday! On this day in 1905, Las Vegas was founded.
Way back when, two townsites were auctioned and sold, establishing what’s now downtown Las Vegas, as well as the Historic Westside. Later on, 168 people voted in favor of incorporating the city of Las Vegas. It wasn’t long before quickie divorces, debauchery and Hoover Dam made Las Vegas a household name.
Today, the city proper holds about 650,000 residents — nearly 3 million in the greater valley — and a lot has changed.
