Man charged after allegedly attacking officer at Kaimuki roadblock

A 35-year-old man was charged after allegedly attacking a Honolulu police officer while attempting to flee an intoxication-control roadblock in Kaimuki early Saturday morning.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, officers stopped the suspect at the roadblock at about 12:47 a.m. Saturday. Police said the man attempted to flee in his vehicle, and an officer trying to disable the vehicle became trapped inside.

The suspect then allegedly attacked the officer while driving at a high rate of speed. Police said the officer was eventually able to overcome the suspect and bring the vehicle to a stop.

The 35-year-old man was arrested at 1:05 a.m. on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer.

The state Department of the Prosecuting Attorney then charged the suspect with one count of attempted first-degree assault and one count of driving with a license suspended or revoked for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. Bail was set at $100,000.
