WATERVILLE — Colby College football coach Jack Cosgrove is temporarily stepping away from the program, the school announced.
In a statement obtained by the Morning Sentinel on Saturday, Colby said Cosgrove “has temporarily stepped away to prioritize providing care for a family member facing unforeseen health concerns.” WABI Bangor first reported the news Friday.
Offensive coordinator Mark Clements coached Colby in a home game against Amherst on Saturday. The Mules led 12-0 early in the second quarter but ultimately lost 21-15 to fall to 0-5 on the season.
Since being named Colby’s head coach in December 2017, Cosgrove has amassed a 26-41 record. He led the Mules to a 6-3 season last year, marking the program’s first winning record since 2005.
Cosgrove previously coached at the University of Maine from 1993-2015. He guided the Black Bears to three Coastal (formerly Colonial) Athletic Association titles and five Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances.
Clements will be the head coach in Cosgrove’s absence. Defensive coordinator Liam Hobbins will serve as associate head coach in addition to his current role.
Colby’s next game is at Hamilton (1-4) at noon next Saturday.
