Search underway for missing hikers near Hanauma Bay ‘rock bridge’

A multi-agency search is underway for two potentially missing hikers who may have been swept into the waters off the Hanauma Bay “Rock Bridge” this morning.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a call from the police department at about 10:30 a.m. today about the belongings left behind by hikers in the area. Honolulu police were also at the scene.

HFD deployed a rescue boat and its Air 1 helicopter, which are searching the ocean near the bridge, along with Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards on rescue jet skis.

First responders are also on the Hanauma Bay Rim Trail, interviewing hikers about the missing individuals, and believe there are potentially two at this time.

The U.S. Coast Guard has also joined the search, according to Ocean Safety, and divers are also in the water. The USCG could not be reached for further details.

Individuals, including a 64-year-old man, have in the past been fatally swept into the ocean at the “Rock Bridge” area, which is considered a dangerous spot on an unsanctioned trail.

No further details are available at this time.
